September has always felt more like a new year to me than January

Welcome to Home Therapy® with Michelle Ogundehin

My guiding ethos is that our homes are never passive backdrops. They have the power to shape how we sleep, focus, recover, connect and feel. So these emails explore some of the science, psychology and practical actions that can help you to transform your home into your greatest source of health. You can dive deeper inside the Happy Insiders Club where we turn the philosophy into monthly momentum.

September has always felt more like a new year to me than January. Perhaps it’s the change in the air, the return to routine after summer, or simply that sense of life gathering itself again after the looseness of August. Whatever the reason, September seems to carry with it an instinct to begin again. And what's great at this point of the year, is that we have the data of the last 8 months to help us.

Because renewal doesn’t have to mean reinvention. It doesn’t require a new regime, a better version of yourself, or another list of things you’re determined to do differently. Sometimes it can be as simple as making time for some reflection so you can access how far you've come already. With this in mind, here are four questions to ask yourself...

  1. If the last 8 months repeated themselves four times over, would you feel horrified or grateful?
  2. What did you think this year was going to be about, and what has it actually been about?
  3. In December, what will you wish you'd started prioritising in September?
  4. What do you know about yourself now, that you didn't know in January?

How is this related to home? every intention we have has to play out somewhere. The questions above may make you return to the habits that you know make you feel better. The rhythms that suit you. A little more order. Less time on your phone. Whatever it is your home can be your ally in attaining it.

So this September, inside the Happy Insiders Club, we’re going to explore what it really means to begin again — and we’re going to use the bathroom to practise it. Not because I want you to create a spa bathroom. Or buy new towels. Or redecorate. But because the bathroom is one of the few rooms in the home devoted almost entirely to acts of renewal.

Because, our homes can help us keep promises to ourselves.

I'd love to show you how.
